Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Through Lemosho Route

The 8 Days / 7 Nights Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and highly recommended routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The route approaches the mountain from the remote western side, offering beautiful landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and a gradual ascent toward the summit.

This 8-day itinerary provides a comfortable pace with valuable acclimatization time, making it an excellent choice for trekkers who want to maximize their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

The trek begins in the lush rainforest before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau. From there, you will pass through the alpine desert, climb the famous Barranco Wall, and continue toward Barafu Camp before making your final summit attempt.

Highlights

Itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and driven toward Londorossi Gate.

After completing registration and park entry procedures, continue toward the Lemosho trailhead.

The trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest, where the trail is surrounded by tall trees, moss, ferns, and rich vegetation.

Your first hiking day is relatively short, allowing you to begin your acclimatization gradually.

You may encounter monkeys and a variety of bird species along the trail.

Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp in the afternoon, where your mountain crew will prepare your tent and dinner.

Altitude: Approximately 2,100m → 2,780m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast, continue climbing through the upper rainforest before entering the heath and moorland zone.

The vegetation becomes shorter as you gain altitude, and the landscape gradually opens up.

Continue toward the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful areas on Kilimanjaro.

You will enjoy impressive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Have lunch along the trail before continuing to Shira 1 Camp.

Upon arrival, settle into camp and relax while your crew prepares dinner.

Altitude: Approximately 2,780m → 3,505m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp

Today is a relatively gentle hiking and acclimatization day across the beautiful Shira Plateau.

After breakfast:

  • Begin your hike across the open plateau
  • Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak
  • Explore the unique volcanic landscape
  • Pass through moorland vegetation and rocky terrain
  • Take regular breaks to allow your body to adjust to the altitude
  • Enjoy lunch along the route
  • Continue toward Shira 2 Camp

The shorter hiking day gives you time to rest and acclimatize.

In the evening, your guide will monitor how you are responding to the increasing altitude.

Altitude: Approximately 3,505m → 3,850m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day and one of the most scenic sections of the trek.

After breakfast, begin ascending toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630m.

The landscape changes as you enter the alpine desert zone, with volcanic rocks and very limited vegetation.

The climb to Lava Tower helps your body adapt to higher altitude.

After lunch, begin descending toward Barranco Camp. This follows the important "climb high, sleep low" principle.

During the descent, you will enjoy impressive views of the Barranco Wall, glaciers, and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon.

Altitude: 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

After breakfast, prepare for one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route—the Barranco Wall.

Although the wall looks challenging from below, the climb is manageable when taken slowly with the assistance of your experienced mountain guide.

You will occasionally use your hands for balance as you move carefully over the rocks.

At the top of the wall, enjoy spectacular views across the valleys and surrounding mountain slopes.

Continue through a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

The relatively short hiking distance allows you to arrive early and have enough time to rest and acclimatize.

Altitude: Approximately 3,960m → 4,035m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

After breakfast, begin your final ascent toward Barafu Camp, the main base camp for your summit attempt.

The trail passes through an increasingly rocky and barren alpine environment.

As you climb, you will have spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak.

Arrive at Barafu Camp around midday or early afternoon.

Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering:

  • Summit preparation
  • Pacing
  • Hydration
  • Clothing
  • Altitude awareness
  • Headlamp and equipment checks
  • Midnight departure procedures

You will have an early dinner and then go to bed as early as possible to rest before summit night.

Altitude: Approximately 4,035m → 4,640m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You will wake around midnight, have a light meal, prepare your equipment, and begin the summit ascent under the stars.

The trail is steep and demanding, and the combination of altitude, cold temperatures, darkness, and fatigue makes this section particularly challenging.

Your guide will set a slow and steady pace.

You will climb toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Uhuru Peak

After several hours of climbing, you will reach the summit of Africa.

At 5,895 meters, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Tanzania and the highest free-standing mountain summit in the world.

Take time to celebrate your achievement and capture photographs before beginning your descent.

Descend back toward Barafu Camp, where you will take a short rest and have some refreshments.

Continue descending toward Mweka Camp, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.

Altitude: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 Hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mweka Camp

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the beautiful montane rainforest.

The vegetation becomes greener and denser as you lose altitude.

Enjoy the final section of your Kilimanjaro adventure while reflecting on your summit achievement.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate:

  • Complete park exit procedures
  • Collect your summit certificate if you reached Uhuru Peak
  • Say goodbye to your mountain crew
  • Meet your driver
  • Transfer to Moshi or Arusha

You can then continue to your hotel, airport, or next Tanzania adventure.

Altitude: Approximately 3,100m → 1,640m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
