Kilimanjaro Grand Expedition – Umbwe Route
Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Through Umbwe Route
The 6 Days / 5 Nights Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and adventurous routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the southern side and is known for its steep trails, dramatic landscapes, and quieter trekking experience.
This itinerary is designed for experienced trekkers or physically fit hikers who are comfortable with steep and demanding terrain. The route begins in the lush rainforest and quickly gains altitude before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco Camp.
The trek continues through Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu, followed by the challenging summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). You will then descend through the Mweka Route.
Highlights
Itinerary
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and driven to Umbwe Gate.
After completing registration and park entry procedures, you will meet your mountain guide, porters, and cook before beginning the trek.
The trail immediately enters the beautiful montane rainforest.
Unlike some other Kilimanjaro routes, the Umbwe Route becomes steep very quickly. You will walk along a narrow ridge between two valleys while climbing steadily through dense forest.
The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially during wet conditions, so good hiking boots and careful footing are important.
Your guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace.
After several hours of hiking, arrive at Umbwe Camp, where your crew will have prepared your tent.
Enjoy dinner and rest after your first challenging day.

You will eventually leave the forest and enter the heath and moorland zone.
As you climb higher, the surrounding landscape opens up, revealing dramatic views of the mountain.
Continue toward Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
The camp provides spectacular views of the surrounding cliffs, valleys, and glaciers.
Arrive in the afternoon, enjoy lunch, and spend the remainder of the day resting and acclimatizing.

You will use your hands occasionally for balance while carefully navigating the rocky sections.
Once you reach the top, enjoy spectacular views across the Barranco Valley.
Continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.
This is a relatively short hiking day, giving your body more time to acclimatize.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

After lunch, your guide will provide a detailed summit briefing.
You will prepare your equipment for the summit, including:

The ascent is slow and demanding because of the steep terrain, extreme cold, and high altitude.
Your guide will establish a steady pace and monitor you throughout the climb.
Barafu Camp to Stella Point
The trail leads upward over steep volcanic scree toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim.
You will take regular short breaks to conserve energy.
Stella Point to Uhuru Peak
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
The final section can be physically demanding, but the spectacular views help make the effort worthwhile.
Uhuru Peak – 5,895m
Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Take photographs, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy the incredible views before beginning your descent.
Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Descend toward Barafu Camp and take a short rest.

The descent provides relief from the high altitude, although the trail can be steep and rocky.
Arrive at Mweka Camp in the evening for dinner and a well-earned rest.
