Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Through Marangu Route

The 6 Days / 5 Nights Marangu Route is one of the most popular and comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the "Coca-Cola Route," Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route that uses mountain huts for overnight accommodation instead of camping.

This 6-day itinerary provides a better acclimatization schedule than the shorter 5-day Marangu climb. The extra day helps you adapt to increasing altitude and gives you a more relaxed pace before the summit attempt.

The route takes you through Kilimanjaro's beautiful rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and Arctic zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Highlights

Itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and driven to Marangu Gate.

After registration and completion of park formalities, you will meet your mountain crew and begin your trek.

The trail starts through the beautiful montane rainforest, where you will walk beneath tall trees surrounded by ferns, moss, and tropical vegetation.

Along the way, you may see blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and different bird species.

Take your time and enjoy the peaceful forest environment before reaching Mandara Hut.

Upon arrival, settle into your hut and enjoy dinner.

Altitude: Approximately 1,860m → 2,720m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mandara Hut

After breakfast, continue your climb through the rainforest before gradually entering the heath and moorland zone.

The vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens up as you gain altitude.

You will enjoy your first impressive views of Kibo Peak, the main summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Continue along the trail toward Horombo Hut, located in a beautiful valley surrounded by rocky peaks and giant vegetation.

After arriving at Horombo, enjoy lunch and relax.

Altitude: Approximately 2,720m → 3,720m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Today is an important acclimatization day.

Instead of immediately climbing higher with your overnight luggage, you will take a shorter hike around the Horombo area.

After breakfast, hike toward the Zebra Rocks or another nearby high-altitude point.

The goal is to spend time at a higher altitude before returning to sleep at Horombo Hut.

During the acclimatization hike:

  • Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks
  • Explore the unique high-altitude vegetation
  • Learn about Kilimanjaro's volcanic geology
  • Practice maintaining a slow and steady walking pace
  • Stay hydrated and follow your guide's altitude advice
  • Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest

The additional acclimatization day is one of the major advantages of this 6-day itinerary.

Altitude: Approximately 3,720m → 4,000m+ → 3,720m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5–7 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, begin the challenging ascent toward Kibo Hut.

The landscape gradually changes from moorland to the dry and rocky alpine desert zone.

The trail crosses the Saddle, a broad area between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.

As you climb higher, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse.

Take your time and walk slowly to conserve energy for the summit attempt.

Upon reaching Kibo Hut, have dinner and prepare your equipment for the midnight summit climb.

Your guide will provide a detailed summit briefing covering:

  • Summit clothing
  • Headlamp preparation
  • Hydration
  • Pacing
  • Altitude awareness
  • Summit safety
  • Departure time

Go to bed early and rest as much as possible.

Altitude: Approximately 3,720m → 4,703m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro climb.

You will wake around midnight, have a light meal, prepare your equipment, and begin the summit ascent in darkness.

The climb is slow and demanding due to the steep terrain, cold temperatures, and high altitude.

Your guide will maintain a steady pace and monitor you throughout the climb.

Kibo Hut to Gilman's Point

The trail leads upward through steep volcanic scree toward Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim.

After reaching Gilman's Point, continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point (5,739m) and then toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak

Continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

At the summit, celebrate your achievement at the Roof of Africa.

Take photographs and enjoy the spectacular views before beginning your descent.

Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Descend toward Kibo Hut where you will take a short rest and have refreshments.

Continue down across the Saddle toward Horombo Hut.

Arrive at Horombo in the afternoon or evening, depending on your pace.

Enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest.

Altitude: 4,703m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 19 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert → Arctic Zone → Heath and Moorland

After breakfast, begin your final descent toward Marangu Gate.

As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes greener.

Enjoy the final hours of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate:

  • Complete the park exit procedures
  • Collect your summit certificate if you reached Uhuru Peak
  • Say goodbye to your mountain crew
  • Meet your driver
