Kilimanjaro Dream Trek – Machame Route

From $4100
/ Adult
7 Days

The 7 Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Also known as the "Whiskey Route," it offers a rewarding combination of beautiful landscapes, gradual altitude gain, and excellent acclimatization.

This itinerary provides an extra acclimatization day compared with the shorter Machame routes, giving your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude. The trek passes through several distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and finally the icy summit zone.

You will climb through the spectacular Shira Plateau, experience the challenging Barranco Wall, pass through Karanga and Barafu camps, and finally make your summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Highlights

Itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and driven to Machame Gate.

After completing registration and park formalities, you will meet your mountain crew and begin the trek.

The first section takes you through the beautiful montane rainforest, where the trail is surrounded by tall trees, moss, ferns, and colorful flowers.

Along the way, you may see blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and various bird species.

Enjoy a picnic lunch along the trail before continuing toward Machame Camp.

In the afternoon, arrive at camp, settle in, and relax while your crew prepares dinner.

Altitude: 1,800m to 3,000m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Machame Camp

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone.

The trail becomes steeper as you climb through rocky terrain and giant heather vegetation.

As you gain altitude, you'll begin to see spectacular views of Mount Meru and the summit of Kibo.

Continue toward the beautiful Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most impressive landscapes.

Enjoy lunch along the trail before continuing toward Shira Camp.

Upon arrival, relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery.

Altitude: 3,000m to 3,840m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Shira Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day.

After breakfast, begin climbing toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630m.

The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the alpine desert zone, with volcanic rocks and sparse vegetation.

Enjoy lunch around Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco Camp. This follows the important "climb high, sleep low" principle, helping your body adapt to altitude.

During the descent, enjoy spectacular views of the Western Breach, glaciers, and the imposing Barranco Wall.

Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon.

Altitude: 3,840m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

After breakfast, begin one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route—the Barranco Wall.

Although the wall looks intimidating, the trail is manageable with the assistance of your experienced guide. You will use your hands occasionally for balance as you carefully make your way upward.

At the top, enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and glaciers.

Continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

The hike is relatively short, giving you time to rest and acclimatize during the afternoon.

Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit.

The trail passes through increasingly barren alpine desert landscapes.

As you climb, you'll have impressive views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak.

Arrive at Barafu Camp around midday or early afternoon.

Your guide will provide a detailed summit briefing, including information about the midnight ascent, altitude management, hydration, clothing, and pacing.

Eat an early dinner and prepare your equipment before going to sleep early.

Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You will wake around midnight, have a light meal, prepare your equipment, and begin the ascent under the stars.

The climb to the summit is slow and demanding due to the altitude and cold temperatures.

You will ascend toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From here, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, celebrate your achievement at the Roof of Africa.

Take photographs and enjoy the breathtaking views across Tanzania and the surrounding mountain landscape.

After spending some time at the summit, begin your descent toward Barafu Camp.

Take a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

The descent provides relief from the high altitude, although the trail can be steep and rocky.

Arrive at Mweka Camp in the evening for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Altitude: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 Hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mweka Camp

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the lush montane rainforest.

The atmosphere changes dramatically as you descend from the high mountain environment into greener vegetation.

Enjoy the final section of your trek and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro climb.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, complete the park exit procedures and collect your official summit certificate if you reached the summit.

Say goodbye to your mountain crew before meeting your driver.

You will then be transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved shower, rest, or onward journey.
