Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Through Northern Circuit Route

The 9 Days / 8 Nights Northern Circuit Route is the longest and one of the most gradual routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the western side and makes a wide circuit around the northern slopes before joining the summit route.

This itinerary is designed for trekkers who want excellent acclimatization, a slower pace, spectacular scenery, and a quieter experience on the mountain. The additional days allow your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude before the summit attempt.

The trek takes you through lush rainforest, the beautiful Shira Plateau, alpine desert, the remote northern slopes, and finally the Arctic summit zone. You will reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) before descending through the Mweka Route.

Highlights

Itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and driven toward Londorossi Gate.

After registration and completion of park entry procedures, continue to the Lemosho trailhead.

The trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest.

The trail is surrounded by tall trees, ferns, moss, and rich vegetation. You may see monkeys and a variety of bird species along the way.

The first hiking day is intentionally short, allowing you to start your acclimatization gradually.

Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp in the afternoon.

Your mountain crew will prepare your tent while you relax and enjoy the surrounding forest.

Altitude: Approximately 2,100m → 2,780m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast, continue your ascent through the upper rainforest.

Gradually, the forest becomes thinner and you enter the heath and moorland zone.

The landscape opens up, providing your first impressive views across the mountain.

Continue toward the spectacular Shira Plateau.

  • Enjoy views of Kibo Peak
  • Walk through giant heather vegetation
  • Explore the volcanic landscape
  • Take regular breaks for acclimatization
  • Enjoy lunch along the trail
  • Continue toward Shira 1 Camp

Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp

Today is a relatively gentle hiking day across the beautiful Shira Plateau.

After breakfast, begin walking across the open plateau.

You will enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

The route is designed to give you time to acclimatize before climbing to higher elevations.

Along the way:

  • Explore Shira's unique vegetation
  • Enjoy panoramic mountain views
  • Take photographs
  • Walk at a comfortable pace
  • Have lunch along the trail
  • Continue toward Shira 2 Camp

Arrive at camp in the afternoon and rest.

Altitude: Approximately 3,505m → 3,850m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, begin climbing toward Lava Tower.

This is an important acclimatization day because you will climb to approximately 4,630m before descending to sleep at a lower altitude.

The trail gradually enters the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape is dominated by volcanic rocks.

Reach Lava Tower and take time to rest and have lunch.

Afterward, descend toward Moir Hut, located on the northern side of the mountain.

This "climb high, sleep low" approach helps your body adapt to the increasing altitude.

The area around Moir Valley is remote and offers spectacular views away from the busier southern routes.

Altitude: 3,850m → 4,630m → 4,200m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10–12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Moir Hut/Camp

After breakfast, continue around the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The trail passes through remote and beautiful alpine landscapes.

Today you will experience the quieter side of the mountain, with fewer trekkers and expansive views.

Along the route:

  • Cross rocky ridges and valleys
  • Enjoy views toward the northern plains
  • Observe the changing mountain vegetation
  • Take regular breaks for acclimatization
  • Enjoy lunch along the trail
  • Continue toward Pofu Camp

Pofu Camp provides a peaceful environment for resting before continuing the northern circuit.

Altitude: Approximately 4,200m → 4,020m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Pofu Camp

After breakfast, continue along the northern circuit toward Third Cave Camp.

The trail continues across the northern slopes, offering spectacular views of Kibo and the surrounding landscape.

The hiking distance is moderate, allowing you to maintain a comfortable pace.

During the day:

  • Continue acclimatizing
  • Enjoy views of Kibo Peak
  • Explore the remote northern landscape
  • Take regular rest breaks
  • Have lunch along the route
  • Continue toward Third Cave Camp

Arrive at camp in the afternoon and relax.

Altitude: Approximately 4,020m → 3,930m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 7 km

Today you begin your gradual approach toward the final summit base.

After breakfast, continue climbing toward School Hut, located at approximately 4,750m.

The trail gradually becomes steeper as you approach Kibo's summit zone.

Take your time and maintain a slow pace.

Upon arrival at School Hut:

  • Have lunch
  • Rest and conserve your energy
  • Check your summit equipment
  • Receive a detailed summit briefing from your guide
  • Prepare warm clothing and headlamps
  • Eat an early dinner
  • Go to bed early

Your summit attempt will begin around midnight.

Altitude: Approximately 3,930m → 4,750m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: School Hut

Today is the summit day and the most challenging part of the entire trek.

You will wake around midnight, have a light meal, prepare your equipment, and begin climbing under the stars.

The trail becomes steep as you ascend through volcanic scree toward the crater rim.

Your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace.

School Hut to Gilman's Point

Continue climbing toward Gilman's Point (5,681m).

The final ascent is physically demanding because of the altitude and cold temperatures.

After reaching Gilman's Point, continue along the crater rim.

Stella Point

You will pass Stella Point (5,739m) before continuing toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak – 5,895m

Continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

At the summit:

  • Celebrate your achievement
  • Take summit photographs
  • Enjoy spectacular views
  • Spend a short time at the summit before beginning your descent

Descent to Mweka Camp

Begin descending toward Barafu Camp.

After a short rest, continue down toward Mweka Camp.

The descent provides relief from the extreme altitude, although the trail can be steep and rocky.

Arrive at Mweka Camp in the evening.

Enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest.

Altitude: 4,750m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Hiking Distance: Approximately 18–20 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 Hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland

Continue toward Mweka Gate.

Upon reaching the gate:

  • Complete park exit procedures
  • Collect your summit certificate if you reached Uhuru Peak
  • Say goodbye to your mountain crew
